Male And Female Condoms

Male and female condoms are barrier methods of contraception and are the easiest type of contraceptives to get hold of. Another great advantage is both males and females can carry them. Condoms are now available in many different shapes and sizes, colour and flavours. If a male condom is used according to instructions it is 98% effective, a female condom is 95% effective, although please check for the Kite mark or CE mark, check the use by date, and finally make sure it is on correctly.

What are the benefits of using a condom?

  1. There are no side effects to using a condom.
  2. You only need to use them when you have sex.
  3. Not only do they protect against pregnancy but also protects both partners from sexually transmitted infections and HIV.
  4. Condoms are now readily available, no visit to your GP or prescription required.
  5. Condoms are now available in many different shapes, colours and flavours which could enhance your sex life.

There is such a wide variety of condoms now on the market they should suit the majority of people. Some people may be sensitive to latex or the spermicidal lubricant which is on the condom (a chemical that kills sperm) but help is at hand. Many varity of condoms do not have a spermicidal lubricant and also Polyurethane condoms are now available.

Can a lubricant be used with a condom?

The majority of condoms are lubricated to make them easier to use. Some people like to use extra lubricant, ideally a water based or silicone based. Many lubricants have mosturising properties with a natural and non tacky feel. Some people prefer spermicidal lubricant for reasurance as a chemical kills the sperm. Remember when using a condom NEVER use an oil based product as they can cause damage to the latex and may split. Any lubricant can be used with a male or female (Femidom) polyurethane condom.

  • NEVER REUSE A CONDOM, IF YOU HAVE SEX AGAIN USE A NEW CONDOM.
  • KITE MARKED AND CE MARKED CONDOMS GO THROUGH RIGOROUS TESTS AND IF USED AS INSTRUCTED SHOULD HELP TO PREVENT IT FROM SPLITTING.
  • BIN USED CONDOMS - PLEASE DO NOT FLUSH IT.
